Beware of Messenger Phishing Scams!
Posted 17 July 2024
Protect your business page and personal account from cybercriminals
Scammers are targeting social media managers of business pages with a new phishing tactic on Messenger. They send a fake “urgent warning” message claiming that your page has been disabled due to violations. The message appears to be from Facebook (Meta) and includes a link to “resolve the issue.”
If you click the link, you could lose control of your account and expose your private information.
How to Identify the scam
- The message is sent from a page named “Je Pagina Is Uitgeschakeld” (Your Page Is Disabled), not from Facebook (Meta) directly
- There may be typos, grammatical errors, or strange phrasing in the message
- The link in the message directs you to a fake login page that looks like Facebook’s.
What to Do
- Do not click on the link
- Report the message as spam to Meta
- Delete the message.
Additional Tips to Protect Yourself
- Enable two-factor authentication (2FA) for all your social media accounts. This adds an extra layer of security by requiring a code from your phone in addition to your password when you log in.
- Be cautious of any messages that create a sense of urgency. Scammers often try to rush you into making a decision without thinking.
- Carefully review the sender’s name and the link before clicking on anything. If something looks suspicious, it probably is.
